Elementary Differential Equations Fall 2014

Course: Elementary differential equations MAP 2302, section 5603

Meeting time and place: LIT 0201, MWF 4th period

Instructor: Jindrich Zapletal

Office: 468 Little Hall, office hours MWF 9th period

Contact: zapletal@math.ufl.edu, 352-294-2343

Textbook: FUNDAMENTALS OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS, Nagle, Saff and Snider, 6th Ed.

Brief description: We will cover chapters 1, 2, 4, 7, and 8. This includes among other things linear differential equations with constant coefficients, Laplace transform, and power series solutions.

Grading system:  There will be three in-class midterms and a final, all of the same weight. The exams are open book open notes. The first midterm covers Chapters 1 and 2, the second midterm covers Chapter 4, the third midterm covers Chapter 7, the final covers Chapter 8 (i.e. the final is not cumulative). The dates of the midterms are Sep.17, Oct 15, Nov 12 (all Wednesdays); the final will be in LIT 0201 on December 18 at 12:30pm. Homework will be assigned at the end of almost every lecture; these assignments will not be collected or graded. Attendance will not be taken. The total grade will be determined using a straight scale (i.e. A=94-100, A-=90–93 etc. )

Sample examps etc: Sample 1  Sample 2 Exam 2 grades (the median was 90, the bottom 10% start at 68) Sample 3 Exam 3 scores with preliminary grade Sample 4 office hours before the final exam: Wed 10th 4-5pm, Fri 12th 9-11:30am Mon 15th 1-4pm, Tue 16th 9-12am, Thu 18th 9-11am.

Further administrative matters: Requirements for class attendance and make-up exams, assignments, and other work in this course are consistent with university policies that can be found in the online catalog at: https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/attendance.aspx.

Students are expected to provide feedback on the quality of instruction in this course based on 10 criteria. These evaluations are conducted online at https://evaluations.ufl.edu. Evaluations are typically open during the last two or three weeks of the semester, but students will be given specific times when they are open. Summary results of these assessments are available to students at https://evaluations.ufl.edu/results/.

Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the Instructor when requesting accommodation.
