🗃️ Course Description

Internships provide you with opportunities to integrate the skills, knowledge and methods gained through your coursework with professional roles, responsibilities and activities in a real-life supervised setting.

Given the nature of our Spanish and Portuguese Studies program, which primarily teaches language and culture, you could carry out your internship in technically any location where there is interaction with the Hispanic communities. For this reason, this syllabus offers an open alternative for you to customize your professional interests.

Participating in an internship in Spanish/Portuguese, specifically, allows you to further develop and enhance your linguistic and cultural knowledge, as well as working with relevant members of the Latinx community.

Variable 1-3 credit, this course has been designed to complement your internship experience through guided reflection, critical analysis, synthesis and discussion. The amount of complementary homework will be determined according to the amount of credits you register.

📄 Application Protocol

Applications for SPRING 2027 must be submitted by 🗓️ October 30.

Students who wish to receive academic credit for an internship must complete the following steps:

  1. Submit a CLAS Internship Application through your department and in consultation with the faculty member responsible for internships.
  2. All credit-bearing internships require two mandatory documents:
    • A completed CLAS Internship Application.
    • A formal Internship Agreement signed by both the internship site and the University of Florida’s authorized signatory (the CLAS Dean).
  3. Before you can be registered for the internship course, the internship faculty member must:
    • Work with the internship site to complete the required Agreement.
    • Review your application carefully to ensure that all information is accurate and consistent with the information provided by the site, including the anticipated number of internship hours.
    • Verify that the requested credit hours and corresponding internship work hours meet College and University requirements.
  4. Once all documents have been completed and approved, the department will submit the required paperwork to Beyond120 for final review.

Important: Students should begin this process well in advance of the semester in which they plan to earn internship credit. Registration cannot be completed until all required documentation has been submitted, reviewed, and approved.

The Spanish & Portuguese Internship application form MUST be signed by you and by your supervisor. Note that to qualify for credit, the internship MUST include a minimum number of hours, as specified below, over a maximum of 15 weeks (one academic semester):

1 credit — 30 internship hours + 15 academic hours = 45 total hours; 2 credits — 60 internship hours + 30 academic hours = 90 total hours; 3 credits — 90 internship hours + 45 academic hours = 135 total hours.

You will be notified via your @ufl.edu e-mail address when your internship position is approved to earn credit. If approved, SPN/POR 3943 will automatically be added to your schedule. If not approved, future guidance will be provided in the email.

📓 Graded Course Components

Grading breakdown by credit hours: All students (1–3 credits) are evaluated on their Internship Evaluation (supervisor feedback) and Assignments. Students enrolled in 2 or 3 credits also complete a Video project, and students enrolled in 3 credits additionally submit a Final Paper.
Grading by credit enrollment: 1 credit — 70% Internship Evaluation, 30% Assignments. 2 credits — 65% Internship Evaluation, 20% Assignments, 15% Video. 3 credits — 60% Internship Evaluation, 15% Assignments, 15% Video, 10% Final Paper.

📘 Grade Scale and Policies

100-73= S / 72-0= U

This course counts toward the minor, major, or certificate.

NOTE: A grade of U (72-0) will not be a qualifying grade for major, minor, Gen Ed, Gordon Rule or Basic Distribution Credit courses. For further information regarding passing grades and grade point equivalents, please refer to the Undergraduate Catalog at
