Biography
With a PhD in Composition Studies from the University of Memphis as well as a Master’s Degree in TESOL from SEMO, Don has taught in higher ed. for over 23 years—teaching ESL in Japan as well as Composition theory, pedagogy, and practice throughout the Midwest, Midsouth, and South. Don has also designed, developed, and directed writing centers at The University of Memphis and SUNY Polytechnic where he was also the WPA. His dissertation—an historical examination of the development of writing centers through the lens of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT)—identified system contradictions and their mediation. In doing so, Don defined epochal movements between 1887-today that have shaped our modern conceptualization of the writing center.
