This picture was taken at Gettysburg when I was the Luce Professor there. Thus, I think of it as my Luce Cannon picture.

Folks who wish to introduce me (at dinner parties, soccer games, or poorly-lit bars) might find this useful:

“Matt Gallman received his B.A. from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from Brandeis University.  He has been a member of the History Department at the University of Florida since 2003.  Prior to that he taught at Loyola College in Maryland, Gettysburg College, and Occidental College.  An author or editor of ten books, Gallman is an historian of 19th Century America, with a frequent focus on the Civil War home front. His courses generally concern 19th Century American History, American Women’s History, the History of Poverty and Welfare, and the Civil War Era.  His most recent publications are Defining Duty in the Civil War: Personal Choice, Popular Culture, and the Union Home Front (UNC, 2015) and, as a co-editor with Gary Gallagher, The Lens of War: Historians Reflect on their favorite Civil War photographs (University of Georgia, 2015).  He is currently working on a history of the Democratic Party during the Civil War.”
