Description and Goals

The course will introduce students first to a historical background of U.S.-China relations and will equip students with the necessary [Chinese and American] foreign policy frameworks to conceptualize the relationship. The second part will examine the question of the American Century, whether it is over and what that means for China’s role globally. Next, the course will look at lingering conflicts and persisting issues that perturb the flow of U.S.-China relations. These include territorial disputes, the question of Taiwan, and cyber-security threats among other things. The last part of the course will be dedicated to examining China’s increasing involvement in developing countries in Africa and Latin America and its implications for U.S.-China relations.
