Course Description: This is the second installment of a two-semester sequence preparing students for Ph.D. exam in logic. 3 credits

Course Pre-Requisites / Co-Requisites: MHF6306 (the first installment of the sequence)

Course Objectives: Students who successfully complete the course will know the elements of classical set theory, the construction of Godel’s constructible universe, Cohen’s method of forcing, and elements of classical descriptive set theory.

Textbook: There are many textbooks that cover the material in this course which can be used more or less interchangeably. I recommend Kunen: Set theory (College Publications, 2013), Jech: Set Theory (Springer, 2003), or Schindler: Set Theory. Exploring Independence and Truth (Springer 2014) for set theory, and Kechris: Classical Descriptive Set Theory (Springer 1994) or Anush Tserunyan notes for descriptive set theory.

Provisional timeline of the course: There will be four parts of the course: 1. Classical set theory, including cardinals, stationary sets, inaccessible and measurable cardinals 2. Godel’s constructible universe 3. Forcing, the proof that the Continuum Hypothesis is independent of ZFC, Martin’s Axiom 4. Descriptive set theory, Polish spaces, Borel and analytic sets. These parts are nearly equal in length.

Grading: There will be four equally weighted take-home assignments corresponding to the four parts of the course. In the first three, I will permit a repeated submission after a first round of grading. There will be no other basis for the total grade. The total grade will be figured according to the standard flat curve: A above 93%, A- 90-92%, B+ 87-89%, B 83-86%, B- 80-82%, C+ 77-79%, C 73-76%, C- 70-72%, D+ 67-69%, D 63-66%, D- 60-62 %, E, I, NG, WF 59%.
