GETTING TO INNSBRUCK

Trains:

Innsbruck is well connected by rail. The Austrian rail company’s website (ÖBB, Österreichische Bundesbahn) will allow cross-border bookings to some destinations, for example direct trains to Zurich, Verona, Bologna or Munich. A few ICE (Intercity Express) services run by Deutsche Bahn will run directly from Innsbruck beyond Munich, e.g. to Berlin. Booking ahead will sometimes allow you to find tickets that are quite a bit cheaper than the regular price.

Trains from Germany can be booked via Deutsche Bahn.

Overnight ‘Nightjet’ trains run between Innsbruck and Amsterdam, or Innsbruck and Rome. There’s also a service that runs between Paris and Munich or Rosenheim in Bavaria.

It is worth having a look at the train companies of both countries involved in a cross-border journey as ticket prices can differ quite a lot between them for the same trip. This website charges a booking fee but can be useful for booking more complex international train trips:

Bus:

Flixbus runs long-distance services to Innsbruck, stopping near the main railway station. They also sell tickets that include a transfer for journeys further afield.

Flights to Innsbruck:

Innsbruck airport has direct flights to Vienna (Austrian Airlines), London Gatwick (Easyjet) and Amsterdam (Transavia) all year, but many other flights are seasonal. An overview of the airport’s flight plan is at the following page, which lists the airlines that operate to Innsbruck.

As well as direct flights it is usually possible to book flights to Innsbruck via a larger hub, often Vienna. In September many destinations are served this way.

NB Lufthansa’s advertised connection in September is a flight to Munich and a bus from Munich to Innsbruck.

Alternative flight routes:

An alternative option in the event that good connecting flights are not available is to fly to Munich and travel by train or bus from there. The train journey from Munich airport involves a trip in to Munich Central or East (Ost) Station to connect to a train to Innsbruck. Flixbus operates a direct bus from Munich airport to Innsbruck. Both options take about 3 hours. As mentioned above, Lufthansa’s tickets to Innsbruck in September have a connecting bus from Munich. Flying to Salzburg takes a similar amount of time for travel on to Innsbruck.
