Neurobiology of Substance Abuse (PSB 4934)

Description and Goals

This course presents an overview of neurobiological models for understanding why some individuals transition from casual use to substance abuse. Approaches to treatment will be considered.

We will:

1. Identify brain regions and neurotransmitters involved in addiction
2. Understand the concept of neuroplasticity as it relates to addiction and the possible cellular and molecular mechanisms by which addictive drugs produce neuroplasticity
3. Gain experience in oral research presentations
4. Gain experience in conducting literature reviews
