Goal, Text and Topics

Goal: Introduce the subject of Ordinary Differential Equations. Develop skills in solving single equation ODEs.

Textbook: Fundamentals of  Differential Equations, 9th edition, Nagle, Saff, Snider (required). MyMathLab (required).

Topics:

  • Introduction to Differential Equations (Ch 1)
  • Methods for Solving First Order ODEs (Ch 2)
  • Higher Order Differential Equations (Ch 4)
  • The Laplace Transform (Ch 7)
  • Modeling with Differential Equations (Ch 3) if time permits

Notes:

  • MAC 2312 is a prerequisite. You must have good integration and differentiation skills.
  • Homework will be assigned  in MyMathLab (Canvas) typically every week.  It is expected that the homework will be assigned on Wednesday and will be due the next Wednesday.
  • Calculators that do not perform symbolic calculations are permitted  during examinations but graphic calculators are not permitted. In general. you should not need a calculator on exams.

Testing  and  Grading:

There will be three exams during the term and a final exam. However,  only your three best scores will count towards your final grade. The final exam will be given on the date and at the time published on the front page and it will NOT be comprehensive. Each of the four exams will be worth 100 points maximum. There will be 4 quizzes 30 min each, each worth 25 points maximum.

Hour Exam                                    100
Hour Exam                                    100

GRADES:

  1. You will have four in class 50 minute exams during the semester but only three scores will count towards your final grade. As a consequence make-up exams will not be given. You are strongly encouraged to take all exams on time. The exam drop is to be used in case of emergencies only.
  2. You will have four in class 30 minute quizzes during the semester but only three scores will count towards your final grade. As a consequence make-up quizzes will not be given. You are strongly encouraged to take all quizzes on time. The quiz drop is to be used in case of emergencies only.
  3. You will have approximately 10 homework assignments which will be assigned in MyMathLab  and computer graded. You may work on homework assignments together but make sure you understand what is going on because some homework problems will be given on exams. Two homework grades will be dropped from the total. The homework  drop is to be used in case of emergencies only.
  4. Cutoffs for letter grades are decided based on jumps in the point total. The final grades are assigned on a curve.

Approximate lower bounds for letter grades may be.

  • A …………… 382 points or higher.
  • B …………… 340 points or higher.
  • C …………… 297 points or higher.
  • D …………… 255 points or higher.

Special Accommodations:

Students requesting classroom accommodations or special arrangements during examinations must first register with the Disability Resource Center (352-392-8565,www.dso.ufl.edu/drc). The DRC  will provide documentation.  The student must then present this documentation to  instructor to meet the  requesting accommodation. This should be done as early in the semester as possible.

Academic Honesty:

Students are expected to know and follow the Code of Student Conduct. In particular, students must refrain from cheating,
not make their work available for cheating, give due credit and citation for any quoted work, and make only fair use of copyrighted materials and software. You are expected to write exams and complete computer projects on your own. The university has a policy on academic honesty, which may be found in the University of Florida Rules, 6C1-4, dealing with Student Affairs. In contrast to the exams and computer projects, you are allowed to work with others on homework problems–including the ones to be handed in.

U Matter We Care:

Your well-being is important to the University of Florida.  The U Matter, We Care initiative is committed to creating a culture of care on our campus by encouraging members of our community to look out for one another and to reach out for help if a member of our community is in need.  If you or a friend is in distress, please contact umatter@ufl.edu so that the U Matter, We Care Team can reach out to the student in distress.  A nighttime and weekend crisis counselor is available by phone at 352-392-1575.  The U Matter, We Care Team can help connect students to the many other helping resources available including, but not limited to, Victim Advocates, Housing staff, and the Counseling and Wellness Center.  Please remember that asking for help is a sign of strength.  In case of emergency, call 9-1-1.

Other Issues:

  • Attendance is not required, but strongly recommended. Lecture notes will be posted on Canvas.
  • Incomplete grades are assigned only for extreme situations.
  • If necessary, I will schedule office hours outside the ones posted.
